Untraceable
Having no idea what this movie was about before seeing this, I have to say I was quite surprised how entertaining this movie was. Okay, so the plot’s pretty silly but it really gets you thinking about society’s voyeuristic culture today on the internet. For those that don’t know the plot: A psychopath starts a website where he kills people live on his video stream on his website. What follows is the FBI trying to stop this guy, whose website is supposedly ‘untraceable’. First off, the gripes:
*SPOILER ALERT*
What’s with the whole ‘the FBI can’t shut the site down because it’s got some special DNS server or w/e BS they said’? Well I’m pretty sure the FBI would have better capabilities than that - as if they couldn’t trace a site - ESPECIALLY since it has live video feeds!!!!!
Also the lead FBI guy annoyed me - he led the operations or whatever. He was like ‘let’s publicize this site even more so that people won’t log onto the site’: I mean COME ON, people are naturally curious - if you’re gunna air a site live in national TV about a murderer who streams videos of his murders, I think people would log on - just to see if its real or not at the very least.
The fact that the killer got a hold of all of the top secret personal details from a trojan embedded in a kid’s horse game is beyond me. Unless the FBI agent was incredibly stupid or something…to have details floating around on her computer like that.
Also, the chatbox on the website sums up nicely the inane stereotype of internet chatspeak noobs who typ3 lyk d15. I mean, not everyone on the internet types like youtube tweens and kanye west. It was funny at the end though: “Where can I download a copy of this video?” Hah.
*END SPOILER ALERT*
Anyway despite all these flaws, I actually really enjoyed this movie. Some people actually walked out on this movie though, which was kinda surprising considering the gruesomeness doesn’t really come close to the intensity of Saw or something. But if you’re looking for a entertaining thriller then definitely see this; at least to see the critical viewpoint of this film which portrays the internet as increasingly impersonal and dispassionate.
3.5/5
